What is Online reputation management?

Online reputation management is the ongoing work of monitoring, generating and responding to reviews and other public feedback about a business.

Also known as: ORM, Review management, Reputation management

Online reputation management is the ongoing work of monitoring, generating and responding to reviews and other public feedback about a business.

For a local business, reputation management is mostly review management. It has three components: monitoring what is being said across Google, Facebook and whichever industry platforms matter in your category; generating a steady flow of new reviews from real customers; and responding to what comes in, particularly the negative reviews.

It is worth separating from crisis communications, which is a different service that also gets called reputation management. Crisis work — search suppression, media response, handling a serious public problem — is priced in the thousands per month and is not what a local business with a 4.2 rating and too few reviews needs.

The mechanism is unusually direct. Review volume and recency are local ranking factors, so the work affects where you appear; and the review profile is what a customer reads before choosing between the three businesses in the map pack, so it affects whether you are chosen. Few marketing activities influence both halves of that sequence.

Why it matters

Reviews are the only marketing asset written by other people, which is exactly why prospects trust them. For a customer who has never heard of you, the review profile is not supporting evidence — it is the entire evidence base.

The common mistake

Fixating on the star average. Volume and recency matter more: a 4.6 with two hundred reviews consistently outperforms a 5.0 with eleven, because eleven does not look like evidence.

Where this fits

Online reputation management is part of reputation management

Understanding the term is the easy half. The service page describes what the work actually involves, and the free assessment says whether it is the thing your business should be spending on next — which is frequently a different question.
