Also known as: Local search engine optimization, Local search marketing

Local SEO is the work of making a business appear in search results for people searching nearby — chiefly in the map results, which are ranked differently from ordinary web results.

Local SEO is a distinct discipline from general SEO, and the difference is not one of scale. Ordinary search results are ranked mostly on relevance, authority and content. Local results — the map pack, Google Maps, Apple Maps — add proximity, business information accuracy and review signals, and weight them heavily. A business can have an excellent website and rank nowhere locally, and a business with a mediocre website can hold the map pack for years.

The work divides into three parts. There is the business profile itself: categories, services, service area, hours, photographs, and keeping all of it current. There is the wider citation footprint — the directories and data aggregators that search engines cross-check to confirm a business is real and consistently described. And there are reviews, which feed both ranking and the customer's actual decision.

None of it moves quickly. Citation corrections take weeks to propagate through the aggregator network, and review volume builds over months. Local SEO is generally a three-to-six-month proposition before rankings shift meaningfully, and longer in a competitive category.

Why it matters

For most local businesses the map pack produces more calls than the entire rest of the search page combined, because it appears above the organic results and carries a phone number. A business that is invisible there is competing for the leftovers.

The common mistake

Treating it as a website task. Most of what decides local rankings happens off your website entirely — on your profile, across directories you may not know exist, and in reviews written by other people.

Where this fits

Local SEO is part of local search

Understanding the term is the easy half. The service page describes what the work actually involves, and the free assessment says whether it is the thing your business should be spending on next — which is frequently a different question.
