Local search

What is Local citations?

A local citation is any online mention of your business name, address and phone number — in a directory, on a review site, in a chamber of commerce listing, or anywhere else.

Also known as: Citations, Business listings

A local citation is any online mention of your business name, address and phone number — in a directory, on a review site, in a chamber of commerce listing, or anywhere else.

Citations are the evidence base search engines use to verify a business. They come in two forms: structured citations, which are entries in directories and listing sites with defined fields, and unstructured citations, which are mentions in articles, blog posts and news coverage. Both count; structured ones are easier to control.

A handful of data aggregators feed a large proportion of the smaller directories, which means correcting a listing at the source often corrects dozens downstream. That is why citation work is usually described as distribution rather than as manual submission — the aggregators do most of the spreading.

Volume matters less than accuracy and relevance. Fifty consistent citations on directories that matter in your industry and region are worth considerably more than five hundred on low-quality sites, and a mass-submission service that creates hundreds of inconsistent listings actively causes harm.

Why it matters

Citations are how a search engine builds confidence that your business exists where you say it does. Without that confidence, everything else you do in local search is working against a weak foundation.

The common mistake

Buying bulk citation packages. Volume without accuracy creates exactly the inconsistency that damages rankings, and cleaning up a bad bulk submission is more work than the original problem.

Where this fits

Local citations is part of local search

Understanding the term is the easy half. The service page describes what the work actually involves, and the free assessment says whether it is the thing your business should be spending on next — which is frequently a different question.
