Update Your Google Business Profile for Winter

Before winter searches start, spend an hour on your Google Business Profile: seasonal services, new photos, a fresh post and hours for the months ahead.

4 min read

Most Google Business Profiles are set up once and then left alone. The hours were entered when the business opened, the photos are from a sunny afternoon two summers ago, and the services list describes what the business did the year it was created. None of that is wrong exactly, but it is out of date, and customers notice.

Early fall is a good moment to fix it. What people search for changes with the weather, and for many local businesses the searches that matter most over the next few months are not the ones that mattered in July. An hour now means your profile reflects what you actually offer when those searches start, rather than a few weeks after.

Update the services you offer this season

Your profile has a services section, and most businesses fill it in once and forget it. Go through it with the next few months in mind. Add anything seasonal you offer, like furnace tune-ups, gutter cleaning, winter detailing, holiday catering or gift certificates, with a sentence describing each one. Remove or edit anything you stop offering in winter, so nobody calls expecting a service you will not provide until spring.

While you are there, check your categories. The primary category has more influence on which searches you appear in than anything else on the profile, and the right one sometimes changes as a business grows. Google Business Profile categories, explained walks through how to choose.

Add photos that look like now

Photos are one of the first things people look at on a profile, and old ones make a business look quieter than it is. Add a handful of new ones: the team at work this fall, recent jobs, the storefront or vehicles as they look today, and anything that shows your seasonal services. Real photos taken on a phone are fine. They are more convincing than stock images and far more convincing than nothing.

A few new photos every month does more than twenty at once and then none for a year. If you have more than one location, each one needs its own, as every location needs its own photos on Google explains.

Publish a post

Google lets you publish short updates directly on your profile, with a photo and a button such as Call or Book. Few small businesses use them, which is exactly why they stand out. Good fall and winter posts are simple:

  • A seasonal service you are now booking, and when your schedule usually fills up.
  • Any change to how you work over the winter, such as new hours or a service you are pausing.
  • A gift certificate or holiday offer, if you sell one.
  • A recent job with a photo and one sentence about it.

One post a month is plenty. The point is that someone checking your profile sees something recent, and knows the business is active.

A profile that looks like July in November tells a customer you might not be paying attention.

Set the hours for the months ahead

If your regular hours change in winter, update them now rather than on the first cold morning. Then add special hours for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's. Around major holidays Google may show searchers a note that your hours might differ, and confirming them, even when they are your usual hours, removes the guesswork. Holiday hours on Google for every location covers how to set them.

Check the basics while you are there

Finish by reading the profile the way a customer would. Is the phone number the one that gets answered? Does the website link go to the right page? Does the description still describe the business? It takes five minutes and catches the small errors that quietly cost calls. The 2026 checklist has the full list.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I update my Google Business Profile?
Check it properly at least at the start of each season, and add a few photos and one post every month. Update hours and services whenever they change, not afterwards.
Can I add seasonal services to my Google Business Profile?
Yes. Add them in the services section with a short description, and remove or edit them when the season ends so customers are not calling about something you are not offering.
Do Google Business Profile posts help?
They show customers the business is active, and they let you highlight a seasonal service or offer with a button to call or book. One a month is enough for most small businesses.
Should I set holiday hours on Google?
Yes, even if you are open as usual. Set special hours for each holiday so customers see accurate times and Google does not warn them that your hours might differ.
