Bring Back October Visitors With Retargeting Ads

Most people who visit your site in October won't book on the first visit. Retargeting ads keep your business in front of them as the holidays get closer.

4 min read

Someone looks at your site in October. They read a service page, check your prices, maybe look at the contact form, and then leave without doing anything. That is normal. Most visitors do not buy or book on their first visit, especially for something they are planning weeks ahead, and in October a lot of holiday shopping is still planning.

The problem is that by the time they are ready, in November or December, they may not remember which business they looked at. Retargeting is how you stay in front of them in the meantime. It shows ads to people who have already visited your site, as they browse other sites, social media or video.

Set it up now, not in December

Retargeting only works on visitors your site has already recorded. Ad platforms do that with a small piece of tracking code, often called a pixel or a tag, installed on your site. Visitors from before the code was installed cannot be added later, so the list starts the day you install it.

That is why October matters. If the code is in place now, every visitor between now and the holidays goes into an audience you can reach later. If you install it in December, your audience is a few weeks of visitors at most. Make sure your privacy policy says you use advertising cookies and tracking, and that any consent banner on your site is set up to respect it.

Split visitors by what they looked at

Someone who read your holiday catering page and someone who landed on a blog post are at different stages, and they should not see the same ad. Most platforms let you build audiences by which pages people visited and how recently.

  • People who visited a service or offer page in the last 30 days are the warmest. Show them the specific offer they looked at, with a clear next step.
  • People who started a booking or contact form and did not finish are worth a reminder that it only takes a minute.
  • General visitors from the last 60 to 90 days can see a broader ad about your business and the season.
  • People who have already booked or bought should be excluded, so you are not paying to advertise to customers you already have.
The visitor who left in October is still deciding. Retargeting makes sure you are part of the decision.

Don't follow people around

Retargeting has a reputation for being creepy, and it earns it when the same ad appears everywhere, every day, for weeks. Set a frequency cap so each person sees your ads only a few times a week, and give each audience an end date. Change the ad as the season moves on: an early-booking message in October and November, last-minute availability in December.

Keep the budget small to begin with. Retargeting audiences are limited by the number of people who visit your site, so spending more than the audience can absorb only means showing the same people the same ad more often.

Measure it by bookings, not clicks

Retargeting ads often get fewer clicks than you might expect, because many people see the ad, remember you and then search for your name or call directly. Judge them by whether bookings and inquiries from returning visitors go up, not by click-through rate alone. If you are running other holiday advertising, set up your holiday ad campaigns in October covers the rest of the plan, and you paid for the traffic, so who showed up? explains how to see which visitors are worth following up.

Paid advertising with Vizible builds retargeting into a wider plan across Google, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, tied to the leads it produces. A free growth proposal shows how it would work for your business.

Frequently asked questions

What are retargeting ads?
Retargeting ads are shown to people who have already visited your website, as they browse other sites, social media or video. They remind visitors who did not book or buy on their first visit.
When should I set up retargeting for the holidays?
As early as possible. Retargeting can only reach visitors recorded after the tracking code is installed, so setting it up in October builds a larger audience before the holidays.
How do I stop retargeting ads from being annoying?
Set a frequency cap so each person sees your ads only a few times a week, give each audience an end date, and exclude people who have already booked or bought.
How should I measure retargeting ads?
By the bookings and inquiries from returning visitors, not only clicks. Many people see a retargeting ad and then search for your name or call directly.
