What is Impressions?

An impression is one instance of your ad, listing or post being displayed to someone — whether or not they noticed it or clicked.

An impression is one instance of your ad, listing or post being displayed to someone — whether or not they noticed it or clicked.

Impressions count displays, not people and not attention. One person seeing the same ad five times generates five impressions. An organic listing appearing at the bottom of page two generates an impression even though almost nobody scrolled far enough to see it.

That makes impressions a measure of reach and visibility rather than of interest. They are genuinely useful for spotting changes — a sharp drop in search impressions usually means a ranking or indexing problem, and a sharp rise in profile impressions often follows a category or service change — but they are a diagnostic rather than a result.

The related term is reach, which counts unique people rather than displays, and frequency, which is impressions divided by reach. In a small local market frequency climbs quickly, and a rising frequency with flat results usually means the addressable audience has been exhausted rather than that the campaign is failing.

Why it matters

Impressions tell you whether you are being seen at all, which is a different question from whether you are being chosen. Both need answering, and confusing the two is how marketing reports end up looking impressive and meaning nothing.

The common mistake

Reporting impressions as a result. A campaign that generated four hundred thousand impressions and eleven calls did not perform well, however the first number reads.

Where this fits

Impressions is part of business portal

Understanding the term is the easy half. The service page describes what the work actually involves, and the free assessment says whether it is the thing your business should be spending on next — which is frequently a different question.
