DIY vs. Managed Marketing

Plenty of local marketing genuinely should be done yourself. The question is which parts, and what your own hours are worth.

Some of the highest-return local marketing work is free and takes an afternoon. Claiming and completing your Google Business Profile, getting your hours right, taking real photographs of your business, and asking satisfied customers for reviews will move more for many businesses than the first year of a retainer. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.

The case for managing it yourself is real: you know your business, your customers and your market better than anyone external will, and the tools have genuinely improved. The case against is equally real, and it is not about capability — it is about consistency. Marketing done in bursts between jobs produces bursts of results, and local search in particular rewards the boring, continuous version.

So the useful way to make this decision is not DIY-or-not. It is to split the work into what is finite and worth owning yourself, what is continuous and usually gets dropped, and what genuinely requires expertise or expensive tooling. Most businesses should be doing the first, honestly assessing whether they will keep doing the second, and buying the third.

Both cases

What each one is genuinely good at

Doing it yourself

You or someone in the business owns the marketing, using the free and low-cost tools.

$0 – $300 a month in tools, plus the hours it takes — which are the real cost.

Where it wins
  • Nobody knows your customers betterYou know why people choose you, what they ask before they buy and what they complain about. That knowledge is the raw material of good marketing, and external teams spend months acquiring a version of it.
  • The highest-return basics are freeProfile completeness, correct hours, real photographs and asking for reviews cost nothing and outperform most paid activity for a business that has not done them.
  • Content you produce is more convincingPhotographs of your actual work, posted by you, read as genuine in a way agency-produced content does not. In trades especially, this is a real advantage rather than a consolation.
  • You learn what actually moves your businessRunning it yourself for a period teaches you what to buy later and what to refuse. Owners who have done it are much harder to sell nonsense to.
Where it does not
  • Consistency is the thing that failsAlmost every self-managed program starts well and goes quiet within three months, because the busy season arrives. Local search and reviews both reward continuity above intensity, so the gaps cost more than the effort saved.
  • Your hours are not freeTen hours a month of an owner's time is the most expensive labour in the business. If those hours would otherwise be spent selling or delivering, the retainer is often cheaper in real terms.
  • The tools that show what is happening cost moneyRank tracking at a neighborhood level, review platforms and proper reporting are not free, and without them you are making changes without being able to see their effect.
  • Paid advertising punishes inexperience quicklyThis is the one area where doing it yourself reliably costs more than it saves. The platforms are designed to make spending easy and efficiency hard, and self-run local accounts routinely waste a third of the budget on geography alone.

Managed marketing

An external team runs it continuously, with the tools and the reporting.

$500 – $3,000+ a month for a local business, depending on channels.

Where it wins
  • It keeps happening in your busy seasonThe single largest practical advantage. Marketing that continues in July when the crew is flat out is worth considerably more than marketing that is excellent in February and absent for the rest of the year.
  • Tooling and measurement are includedRank tracking, review management and reporting come with the arrangement, which means changes can be judged rather than guessed at.
  • Mistakes are cheaperParticularly in paid advertising, where the difference between a competently structured account and a self-built one is frequently larger than the management fee.
  • Your time goes back into the businessFor most owners the hours recovered are worth more deployed on sales, delivery or hiring than on learning a marketing platform.
Where it does not
  • It costs money you may not need to spendA business that has not done the free fundamentals is buying management of a problem it could fix itself in a fortnight. Any honest provider will tell you that before taking the retainer.
  • You lose some authenticityExternally produced content is rarely as convincing as an owner posting their own work. The best arrangements keep some of the content in-house for exactly this reason.
  • It only works if you stay involvedHanding marketing over entirely and never looking at it is the most common way a retainer wastes money. The reporting exists to be read, and providers get worse when nobody is reading it.
  • Quality varies and the price does not tell youThis industry has an unusually wide range of competence at similar price points. Choosing badly is expensive and slow to detect.

The honest answer

Which one you should choose

Do it yourself if you have not done the basics

Claim the profile, complete it properly, fix the hours, add real photographs, ask your last fifty customers for a review. That is a fortnight of evenings and it will outperform the first three months of most retainers. Start here regardless of what you decide next.

Do it yourself if you will genuinely keep it up

If someone in the business will spend a few hours a week on it every week, including the busy months, self-managed local marketing works. Be honest about that commitment — most businesses that think they will, do not.

Buy management for the continuous parts

Review generation, listing maintenance and reporting are boring, endless and exactly what gets dropped. They are also where the compounding happens, which makes them the highest-value thing to hand over.

Buy management for paid advertising specifically

This is the clearest case. Self-run local ad accounts typically lose more to targeting and tracking errors than a management fee costs, and the losses are invisible without the tooling to find them.

Questions that come up

Claim and complete the Google Business Profile, keep hours accurate, upload real photographs regularly, and ask satisfied customers for reviews. None of it requires expertise, all of it moves rankings, and no agency can do the asking as well as the person who just did the work.

Eight to twenty for a single-location business doing it properly — profile upkeep, review requests and responses, a couple of social posts a week, and looking at what happened. It is the review and response work that most often gets skipped, and it is the part that compounds.

Sometimes, and it is worth asking for exactly that rather than a full program. Listings and review management at the maintenance level is a modest monthly cost, and it is the part most likely to lapse if it stays on your own list.

When your listings are wrong, your site is slow, you have almost no reviews and nobody has ever looked at where your customers come from. Those are finite problems worth fixing before you commit to a monthly fee — and a provider who takes the retainer without mentioning them is telling you something.
